Apart from the first photo, which shows the source of the River Darent near Sevenoaks, the photos were taken near the village of Horton Kirby, about three-quarters of the way from source to mouth. They are representative of the majority of this lowland stream.
The source lies in a valley with deciduous woodland on the higher ground and cattle pastures on either side of the small stream. The source is fed mainly by springs.
Human influence is strong here as the stream is confined to a narrow channel under the bridge. Velocity is increased and the strongest current is confined to the centre of the stream as it emerges from under the bridge.
Beyond the bridge, the channel is wide, shallow and straight. There is some disturbance of the flow due to pebbles and a few pieces of debris on the bed of the stream and due to the overhanging vegetation at the sides.
Some of the debris that affects the flow of the stream is human, in this case, pieces of brick.
The vegetation within the channel is very sparse in this section and has little affect on the flow of the stream.
