Why is it important to use a Baseline Assessment?
  • In all schools, including selective schools, there will be a range of abilities entering Year 7.
  • All schools draw from a range of feeder schools and the new Year 7s will have had varying experiences of Geography as a subject. This problem is being exacerbated by the government relaxing the requirements of KS1 and KS2 Geography.
  • Baseline Assessment in Geography can be used to support value-added data collected by the department. Much of the baseline data currently offered to departments is based on KS2 performance in the core subjects and/or CAT tests taken upon entry to secondary school. This data, whilst a useful indicator of general ability, is not specific to Geography and does not allow you to collate 'can-do' geographical statements.
  • Baseline data is a useful tool to help departments review their curriculum provision and Schemes of Work in Year 7 once the analysis of what the children 'know and can do' is completed.
  • Geographical baseline data can be used to assist teachers in building a portfolio of evidence of progression for Threshold Assessment - particularly those who teach a majority of their lessons in Keystage 3.
  • Last, but not least - not only will you find it a very useful and interesting exercise to carry out BUT the Core Management team/LEA/OFSTED cannot fail to be impressed by any department that is doing baseline assessment!! Let Geography lead the way.....
The Baseline Assessment is being used in my own and many other schools. As soon as I find the time, I will post up a report of my results and make available some FREE Excel templates which can be used to analyse the results in detail. You can then download the templates from this website for your own use.
