You are now a little further along the beach moving westwards. This set of photos shows how the cliffs are eroded by the sea. Although the sandstone is relatively soft, there are small differences in resistance and the waves pick out the weakest points. Areas of more resistant rock stick out from the cliff face [ picture 'a' ] and periodically, small stacks form [ picture 'c' ]. These pillars of sandstone rock are very short-lived and usually disappear during the winter in the big storms. As the waves at high tide undercut the cliff, a notch and sometimes small caves (usually no more than a metre high or deep) may form, but the soft sandstone easily collapses [ picture 'b' ].
