You have now arrived at Bishopstone Glen. Here, a small stream has cut a valley through the cliffs and created a gap. A set of wooden steps takes you back up on to the clifftop for the walk back to Reculver.
Picture 'a' shows Bishopstone Glen from the lower part of the beach looking southwards. The large rocks protecting the soft cliffs from erosion can be seen on the left. Picture 'b' shows the valley closer up and the stream can be seen disappearing into the coarse, shingle ridge at the top of the beach. Occasionally, the stream has enough power to wash away the shingle and run directly into the sea but eventually the storm waves rebuild the beach. Picture 'c' is a view looking westwards from Bishopstone Glen. Once again, the coast is heavily defended and there is a concrete sea wall with a wide promenade fronted by a regular series of wooden groynes to slow down the longshore drift. The reason for this is that the area above the cliffs has increasing numbers of houses as you progress towards the town of Herne Bay. Picture 'd' is looking eastwards back along the beach. It shows the effectiveness of the large boulders (rip-rap) which are protecting the cliff. Vegetation is beginning to colonise the more stable slopes. |
