Decision Making Exercise - Tasks
Teachers: There is a Microsoft WORD version of the tasks which can be downloaded by clicking HERE.
TASK 1: Explain why farmers such as Peter Barton are looking for ways to diversify?

TASK 2: Describe and explain the views of the people who live in the local area. Are the majority likely to support, oppose or remain neutral about his plans?

TASK 3: Study carefully the three main aims of the National Park Authority:
  • to preserve the environment of the area
  • to provide opportunities for visitors to enjoy the area
  • to look after the social and economic well-being of local people
Take on the role of Andrew Swift, the Planning Officer and write a report considering each of these aspects in relation to the plans for Dalecourt Farm. Make a decision whether to give planning permission or not and explain your reasons.

TASK 4: Explain briefly how Peter and Sarah might react to:
  • being granted planning permission
  • refusal of planning permission

Further research ideas:

1. Try to find examples of real planning applications in National Parks and whether they were given approval or not.

2.How can local people make their opinions heard in such areas? How do they oppose plans that they disagree with?
