This photo shows a run-down area of Harlem. Many of the original houses were large architect-designed houses built for middle and upper class families. As some of these families moved out to other areas of New York, many of the houses became run-down and some were subdivided into smaller flats. Urban renewal in the last 30 years has resulted in many houses being demolished and replaced by modern tower blocks of flats. In other areas, the original houses have been retained and renovated.
