This photo shows the site of the original Twin Towers - now known as 'Ground Zero'. Many of the 'smaller' towers surrounding the Twin Towers were badly damaged and some were still covered in plastic sheeting 18 months after the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. The underground station below the Twin Towers has been rebuilt and was due to open shortly after our visit. To the right can be seen a memorial cross built from the wreckage of the damaged buildings. The diagram on the left shows the layout of the buildings in the area (with the 'small' towers in the background of the photo highlighted in yellow). The arrow shows the point from which the photo was taken. It is impossible to convey the scale of the destruction in a photo and no easier to describe in words.
