This NASA satellite image shows the irrigated land alongside the River Nile in Egypt. The green irrigated land alongside the thin blue river stands out clearly in the sandy Sahara desert. Without the water from the Nile, the source of which lies hundreds of miles further south in the mountains of Sudan and Ethiopia, there would be no life in this barren wilderness. Dry valleys, called wadis, can be seen alongside the River Nile.
