You are standing on the Northern Sea Wall looking E. towards Minnis Bay and the Isle of Thanet. On photo 'b', you are looking S. over the Wantsum Channel. The concrete sea wall is wide and extends a total of 4.5 kms. The land behind is below sea level and until Roman times, was an open waterway [ the Wantsum Channel ]. People had to cross to the Isle of Thanet by ferry. As the channel gradually became silted up, it turned to marshland and has now been reclaimed for farmland. It has to be drained by large dykes and protected by the sea wall or it could easily be flooded again by the sea. To the right of the second photo is a small oyster hatchery. The oysters are taken to Seasalter where they are grown on in net bags on the seabed.
