You are now about 500 metres west of the twin towers, looking at the start of the unprotected section of coastline. There were originally some old sea defences here but some of these were being removed in March 1999 [Picture c]. Since they were installed in the 1950's, the cliffs have been eroded back about 10 metres and the rusting metallic posts had become both an eyesore and a danger. The remaining posts have had boulders stacked aginst them to provide better protection [Picture b]. At low tide, it is possible to walk about a mile along the foot of the cliffs to Bishopstone Glen where a set of steps takes you back up on to the cliffs for the return walk.
