Geography Action Week - Images of the Other Countries

Time to put your thinking caps on and think about New York.

You have just six images to learn something about this city. New York is located on the east coast of the U.S.A.. A lot of people from western Europe and Japan visit New York for a short break. They go to all the tourist sites - Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Times Square, Central Park and the Empire State Building. Do these visitors get a fair picture of what life is like in this important city? Does it represent life in all of America or is it different in different areas?
The New York Police Department - we have all seen them on TV. Here they are relaxing in the sunshine along 5th Avenue. Is this a typical part of their day? Can you read the letters on the side of the car and see what they stand for? Why are they there?
This is an area called Harlem. What is it famous for? Does it have a positive image? This part is very run-down although these were once very nice buildings. Should they be demolished or renovated? What would the local people prefer? Many parts of Harlem have now been smartened up.
This is a view from the top of the Empire State Building looking 'downtown' towards the city centre where all the business buildings are located. This is where the 'Twin Towers' were before the terrorists blew them up on September 11th 2001. In the distance is a small island with a very famous statue on it. What is it called? Why are the majority of the buildings so tall in this part of New York?
This is a view of the front of the United Nations buildings in 'downtown' New York. Each flag represents a member of the United Nations. Do you recognise any of the flags? How many member countries are there in the U.N.? Who is the leader of the United Nations?
This is a view of a very famous statue. What is it called? Do you know which country built and gave the statue to America? See if you can find out what is written on the book that is carried in the left hand. The torch has an observation tower built into it but this is currently closed to visitors - do you know why?
This is a view of Times Square. It is one of the noisiest, most lively locations in New York. At night time it is a blaze of neon signs many of which are animated e.g. steam coming out of a cup of coffee, etc. Why do so many people come to this area? What is the equivalent area in London called?
